self-portrait on an artist's working table site specific installation layered stencil graffiti, ready-made yellow plywood table 2016–2017 From October 2016 to January 2017 Mäemets was studying for a short semester at the Fine Arts Academy Vienna in contextual sculpture class run by Austrian artist Heimo Zobernig. During her studies there, she was completely lost in the bubble of fine arts, but also in herself. While trying to fit in but feeling lost more than ever and dealing with everyday issues of how to use an artist's space in a shared studio, Mäemets' decided to create her first ever self-portrait directly on her large yellow studio table (that every new student was lucky to get if willing to fight for it). A table that she never used for actual working but that was too valuable not to hold on to. i was here is a time capsule of Mäemets' state of mind in Vienna. A period so unique in her personal growth that it had to be stated in a self-portrait format. i was here was displayed at the annual student's exhibition show Rundgang 2017 in Fine Arts Academy Vienna. The further fate of Mäemets' self-portrait (hence the tabletop) is currently unknown. Video editing by Rait Lõhmus Photos by Maarja Mäemets Maarja in Vienna photo gallery: |
